COHerent Optical Resonance Transmitters

The 2nd Project Meeting

15 September 2025 – Torino-Italy

15 September 2025 – 2nd COHORT Project Meeting

The second meeting of the COHORT Project (COHerent Optical Resonance Transmitters), funded under the Eureka Eurostars Programme, was hosted at Politecnico di Torino.

Meeting Summary:
This in-person event brought together researchers and industry experts to review progress and align next steps for developing next-generation multi-aperture VCSEL technology. The discussions focused on bridging theory and experiment, addressing mode-coupling challenges, and exploring practical applications such as Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) and precision sensing using Self-Mixing Interferometry (SMI). The collaborative environment fostered valuable exchanges of data and ideas, setting the stage for the next phase of the project.

Highlights from the Meeting:

  • Politecnico di Torino presented theoretical models for mode-coupling in VCSELs
(Alberto Tibaldi, Martino D’Alessandro, Pierluigi Debernardi, Valerio Torrelli)
  • VI Systems GmbH reported on fabrication technologies and experimental validation of multi-aperture VCSELs
    (Vitaly Shchukin)
  • Ruhr University Bochum shared experimental results on high-speed dynamics and coherent mode locking
(Markus Lindemann, Thomas de Adelsburg Ettmayer)
  • JULIGHT Srl demonstrated applications of multi-aperture VCSELs in SMI for modal analysis and RoF communications
    (Guido Giuliani, Keyvan Azimi Asrari)

This collaborative project is co-funded by the European Union through the “Innovative SMEs“ Eurostars 3 CoD 06 Call 2024 and supported by national research ministries (MUR, BMBF).
