COHerent Optical Resonance Transmitters

The 3rd Project Meeting

25 February 2026- Bochum- Germany
Ruhr-Universität Bochum

The third project meeting of COHORT – COHerent Optical Resonance Transmitters , funded under the Eureka Eurostars programme, was held on 25 February 2026 at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), Germany.

The meeting brought together the COHORT project partners to review recent developments, exchange experimental and theoretical results, and discuss the progress of the project towards the development of coherent multi-aperture VCSEL technologies for high-speed communications and sensing applications.

During the meeting, all partners presented updates on their recent research and development activities.

Politecnico di Torino

The Dipartimento di Elettronica e Telecomunicazioni of Politecnico di Torino presented recent results on the vectorial modelling of the dynamics of two-aperture bow-tie VCSELs.

The presented work contributes to the understanding and modelling of the dynamic behaviour of multi-aperture VCSEL structures.

Contributors: Alberto Tibaldi, Martino D’Alessandro, Valerio Torrelli.

VI Systems GmbH

VI Systems GmbH reported on recent technology developments for split-contact multi-aperture VCSELs, together with related experimental results.

The developments address the implementation and characterization of advanced multi-aperture VCSEL structures within the COHORT project.

Contributors: Vitaly Shchukin, Nikolay Ledentsov, Nikolay Ledentsov Jr., Vera Zerova.

Ruhr-Universität Bochum

The Lehrstuhl für Photonik und Terahertztechnologie at Ruhr-Universität Bochum presented experimental results concerning the high-speed dynamics of multi-aperture VCSELs.

Particular attention was given to the coherent locking of modes under injection of polarized light pulses, providing further insight into the control and dynamics of coherent emission from multi-aperture VCSEL structures.

Contributors: Markus Lindemann, Thomas de Adelsburg Ettmayer.

JULIGHT Srl

JULIGHT Srl presented recent results on the application of multi-aperture VCSELs in Self-Mixing Interferometry (SMI), with a focus on their potential use in industrial sensing applications.

The work investigates the use of the coherent properties of multi-aperture VCSELs in SMI configurations and their potential advantages for sensing applications.

Contributors: Guido Giuliani, Keyvan Azimi Asrari.

Project progress

The third project meeting provided an opportunity for the partners to exchange recent results and coordinate the next stages of the COHORT research and development activities. The results presented by the consortium demonstrate continued progress in the development, modelling and experimental characterization of multi-aperture VCSEL technologies and their potential applications in communications and sensing.

This collaborative project is co-funded by the European Union through the “Innovative SMEs“ Eurostars 3 CoD 06 Call 2024 and supported by national research ministries (MUR, BMBF).
